Background of the Study
Civic engagement, which involves active participation of citizens in decision-making and governance processes, is essential for fostering democratic governance and community development. Effective communication strategies are critical for encouraging civic engagement, as they provide platforms for information dissemination, dialogue, and collaboration between citizens and government. In Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area (LGA), Kebbi State, communication tools such as social media, radio programs, and community forums have been used to promote civic engagement. Studies reveal that participatory communication approaches empower citizens to express their views, influence policies, and hold leaders accountable (Ahmed et al., 2023). This study evaluates communication strategies for civic engagement in Birnin Kebbi LGA, focusing on their effectiveness, challenges, and impact on governance and community development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential for civic engagement to improve governance and development outcomes, citizen participation in Birnin Kebbi LGA remains low. Barriers such as inadequate communication infrastructure, lack of awareness, and limited access to information hinder effective engagement (Okafor et al., 2024). Additionally, existing communication strategies often fail to address the specific needs and preferences of the local population, resulting in low levels of participation and trust in governance processes. This study investigates the effectiveness of communication strategies in promoting civic engagement, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement in Birnin Kebbi LGA.
